The existence of various natural stones that share geographical location, historic buildings and/or geological history gave rise to the concept of the Global Heritage Stone Province (GHSP), developed by the Heritage Stone Task Group (HSTG) of the International Union of Geological Sciences and the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) Commission C-10 Building Stone and Ornamental Rock. Some or most of the natural stones within a province should also be recognized as Global Heritage Stone Resources (GHSR)
